How Do You Choose a Boresighter?
Any seasoned hunter should have a boresighter, as it provides an accurate reference point for the shooter and saves ammunition expenses and time. With a boresighter, a shooter will still have to adjust for altitude and wind speed and direction, but it will definitely help in getting closer to the target. There are quite a few models in the market, but you must do some research to find the best boresighter to improve your shooting technique. Here are a few pointers to help you make the best purchase!
There are two types of boresighters in the market: mechanical and laser. Mechanical boresighters are quite basic and use a number of arbors, specifically sized for each caliber. After selecting the proper arbor and inserting it in the muzzle, the boresighter will be attached and aligned to the arbor. A laser boresighter will project a dot on the target and align your sight with the dot and the bore of the gun.
What to Consider When Buying a Boresighter
Ensure durability: Inexpensive laser boresighters cannot survive rough use for a long time. As this is a one-time investment, it is better to buy from a reputed brand so that it lasts at least a decade.
Think about the caliber: Laser boresighters need to match the caliber of your gun. For a magnetic boresighter, you need not think about matching the caliber.
Determine your purpose: There are two kinds of laser boresighters. The first one is fitted in a gun’s cylinder or chamber and is perfect for a distance between 15 and 100 yards. This one can be used for all barrel lengths. The second one will need a barrel length of minimum four inches and can be used at a distance between 10 to 100 yards.
Consider your budget: Before you buy any model, you should also fix a budget and look for a boresighter with proper technical specifications within that range.
